CMT addresses two challenges at once: Egypt’s roughly 42 million tons of annual agricultural waste, and the country’s roughly US$3 billion yearly bill for imported industrial chemicals.
Agricultural Waste Valorization
Egypt generates large volumes of agricultural residue every year — rice husks, sugarcane bagasse, and tamarind by-products among them — much of which is disposed of in ways that cause serious environmental harm. CMT collects and sorts this waste and puts it through chemical processing to produce industrial thickeners and functional materials, keeping valuable biomass in productive use instead of treating it as waste.

Import Substitution
Chemicals are among Egypt’s top imported goods, with the country spending roughly US$3 billion a year on chemical imports. By manufacturing thickeners and intermediate chemicals locally from agricultural waste, CMT works to reduce that reliance and keep more of that value inside the Egyptian economy.
Circular Economy
CMT’s model links academic research directly to industrial application: agricultural waste is collected, processed through controlled chemical modification, and converted into functional materials for the printing, dyeing, detergent, food and pharmaceutical industries — keeping resources circulating rather than discarded.
